If your ancestral research has taken you back to 1605 and includes the name Alice Wellington, then the following will be of special interest to you! In May of that year Alice Wellington, a Catholic and excommunicate from the Church of England, died; the vicar of the time at St. Andrews was Richard Heyns and he refused to bury her much to the anger of many of the locals. What followed became known as “The Herefordshire Commotion”, when the very cross locals gathered en masse and interred Alice in the graveyard themselves. It seems that there was a great deal of violence involved both at the time, and during the following weeks, and many arrests were made. Eventually things did die down, but the episode is recorded for all time.
